Rebuilding Lives involves investing in those who live in our community to enable them to reach their full potential in Christ – spiritually, physically, economically, and socially. Our goal is to break the cycle of poverty that continues to plague too many in our target area. Valerie Green is one of our partners and a real hero in our community. Ms. Green has spent her entire career in education (18 years) teaching at Barr Elementary, and she tells me that she doesn’t want to teach anywhere else as she has come to love the children in this school. She was instrumental in our after-school program, which we established to work with the twenty-five lowest performing third through fifth graders. After only one semester, these students went from seventy percent proficiency in math to eighty percent, and from forty-nine percent proficiency in language arts to an astounding eighty-nine percent. Ms. Green says:
“Not only did our children learn and do well on their tests, but they also became well rounded students because the Voice of Calvary staff welcomed them just like they were their own children – just like we treat them.”
