On August 2, 2017 VOCM’s ‘Steam Team’ held its first STEM (Science, technology, Engineering and Math)/STEAM Teacher Training at VOCM’s facilities in west Jackson. The training objective was to instruct and demonstrate to the assembled teachers STEM methodology and techniques. Training activities included lecture, demonstrations, role playing, small group discussion and an assignment to develop a STEM class plan. Seventeen teachers from west Jackson schools attended.
PRESENTERS
Dr. Jana Perry, Director of Education at the Children’s Museum. Dr. Perry’s presentation was about “The Necessity for Project Based Learning”.
Dr. John Hunt is Co-Founder of the Mississippi College STEM Institute and a Lead STEM Facilitator. Dr. Hunt’s session was about how “STEM Changes the Narrative”.
Ms. Debra Raddin, Co-Founder of the Mississippi College STEM Institute. Ms. Raddin’s presentation was entitled “Nurture Thinking Grows the Global Workforce”.
Attending teachers were excited and gave enthusiastic feedback to the presenters. The Steam Team is enthusiastic and excited as they continue to work to bring the STEM/STEAM learning experience to our west Jackson students.
