Future Initiatives To “Change The Narrative” For Mississippi

Our continual goal is to provide pathways and programs to those seeking to improve their lives and enhance their  respective communities. We seek to develop programs that will fill gaps in services and that will transition the poor and underserved to lives of self-sufficiency and sustainability. Our four priorities for the future are:

Housing

Develop home ownership opportunities for all through growing collaborations, as owning a home is still a major means of attaining economic stability.

VOCM is poised to increase our affordable housing efforts, and reach our goal of revitalizing entire city neighborhoods. We are building upon our 40 year history of providing affordable housing for persons of low-to-moderate income.

West Jackson: Changing the Narrative!

This initiative will work with early childhood facilities and a pre-K class as a pilot program to train teachers and work with parents as “first-line” educators.

Early Childhood Education       Kindergarten Readiness (0-8)

Veterans Housing

New housing development which will focus exclusively on the construction of the first all-veteran housing complex in the City of Jackson.

Our previous experience working with veterans through the SSVF program made us realize the need for permanent housing for low-income veterans. VOCM is in the initial phase of developing the strategy and concept for a housing complex that will be called Heroes Village.

STEAM/STEM Program – Youth Education & Development

Creation of a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) program for students in preparation for jobs of the future.

In Addition:

Redevelopment of 531 W. Capitol Street, Jackson, MS 39203

One of the major challenges facing urban areas is disinvestment in low income communities. Thus a major part of community development in inner cities must include economic development initiatives. Economic development requires a long term outlook, as well as cooperation and coordination with many community partners. In keeping with the recommendations, Voice of Calvary Ministries has had our property located at 531 W. Capitol Street rezoned to commercial, mixed use. We are in the process of working with potential developers for this site which is on the eastern edge of our target area near downtown. Stay tuned as we move forward with our mixed use development we are calling Downtown West.
