**This was a past initiative of VOCM and is not a program currently being offered.
VOCM has been working with the youth in our community since 1975 when we started our first after school program. The goal of our Youth Education and Development initiative is to provide each young person the opportunity to receive the knowledge and support that he or she needs to excel in all areas of life. . The deliberate intent is for youth living in “so-called low income zip codes” will not be defined by the environment in which they reside. Since our beginning, we have impacted the lives of over 3,000 future leaders.
In 2014, we sponsored an after school program at our local elementary school, Barr Elementary School. In consultation with the principal and staff there, we developed a program entitled Building Strong Children in which we worked with the twenty-five lowest achieving students in the third to fifth grades. The results were truly phenomenal as this group of children improved from proficiency of 49% in English language arts to 89%, and from 70% proficiency in math to 80%.
